Globe-trotting McIlroy at home in FedExCup playoffs

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Soon to be without a house, Rory

McIlroy again showed he feels completely at home in the PGA

Tour's FedExCup playoffs as he stayed on track on Friday to

secure the season-long title and the bonus of $10 million. The

globe-trotting world number one, who is selling his $3.2

million mansion in Northern Ireland because he hardly ever

stays there, carded a two-under-par 68 in the Tour Championship

second round to remain atop the FedExCup points standings.

Charging Furyk underlines his Ryder Cup value

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Jim Furyk swept aside any suggestion

that he was fortunate to earn one of four U.S. captain's picks

for next week's Ryder Cup as he charged into a one-shot lead at

the Tour Championship in Friday's second round. A veteran of

seven Ryder Cups, Furyk is the only member of this year's U.S.

team without a victory on the 2012 PGA Tour but he put himself

in good position to change that by firing a six-under-par 64 on

the challenging East Lake Golf Club layout.

NBA's Brooklyn Nets open doors to new arena

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Big-time professional sports returned

to Brooklyn for the first time in more than 50 years on Friday,

when the Brooklyn Nets finally unveiled their new stadium after

a decade-long fight with neighbors. The 675,000-square-foot,

18,000-seat Barclays Center will officially open on September

28 with a concert by rapper Jay-Z, and the Nets - formerly the

New Jersey Nets - will play their first game at the arena,

against the New York Knicks, on November 1.

Vettel dominates Singapore practice

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Formula One world champion Sebastian

Vettel shrugged off the disappointment of failing to finish in

Monza by dominating both free practice sessions for the

Singapore Grand Prix on Friday. An alternator problem ended his

Italian Grand Prix challenge two weeks ago but the German, who

won this race last season, had no such problems around the

streets of Singapore and offered evidence that he can reignite

his title challenge this weekend.

Furyk takes charge at Tour Championship

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Veteran Jim Furyk, hunting his first

PGA Tour victory in two years, took advantage of a sizzling

start to grab a one-shot lead in Friday's second round of the

elite Tour Championship. While tournament favorite Rory McIlroy

carded a two-under-par 68 to stay on track for FedExCup playoff

honors and the mind-boggling bonus of $10 million, Furyk

birdied seven of the first 10 holes on the way to a best-of-the

week 64.
