UAE Ramadan daily fast to last nearly 15 hours

The Ramadan fast this year is expected to be long – lasting nearly 15 hours – and hot – with temperatures soaring to a sweltering 46C, UAE website Emirates 24/7 reported on Sunday.

During the holy month, fasting hours will range from14 hours and 50 minutes at the beginning, dropping to 14 hours 20 minutes at the end, the website reported, citing Islamic scholars.

Ramadan is expected to start on or around July 20 and run until August 19. During this time, Muslims around the world fast during daylight hours until the Maghreb prayer at sunset.

During fasting hours Muslims are required not to eat, drink, smoke or take part in sexual activities.

Traditionally the fast is broken with friends and family in what is called an Iftar.

In Gulf Arab countries, eating or drinking in public during the fasting hours is illegal and may be punishable by fines and jail terms.
