The sleepy resort town tucked away between the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains is enjoying the calm before the storm.
Sochi is likely to see its population double during the Winter Games.
Its brand-new airport is preparing for the arrival of around 400,000 passengers.
They've called for reinforcements from Singapore, where the airport staff is trained in dealing with high levels of traffic--with up to 4,500 travellers expected through her at peak times.
SOUNDBITE 1: Leonid Sergueiev (man), director general of Sochi airport (Russian, 11 sec):
"This winter will be like the summer. Usually in winter there are five or six times fewer passengers. But this time, the month of February will be like the month of July at the airport."
Shops are stocking up for the international trade before security in the city clogs up traffic.
And restaurant and bars here have also given their tables an extra polish.
SOUNDBITE 2: Janna (woman), restaurant owner (Russian, 12 sec):
"The authorities have said we have to do things properly, like write down everything that is visible in both Russian and English, and also in the official documentation. There must be order, cleanliness and colour..."
And to overcome any language barrier, Sochi's inhabitants have been brushing up on their English.
Nurses, policemen and Winter Games volunteers have been sent to crash-courses.
SOUNDBITE 3, Yevgeniya Voronina (woman), English teacher (Russian, 22 sec):
"We are hosting the Olympic Games and lots of foreigners will come. Sochi's residents want to be able to communicate with them, to learn their culture and that's why they are super motivated to learn English."
While some are excited by the impending invasion, other can't wait for it all to be over.
Preparations for the Games have turned the resort town into a giant construction site for years, resulting in repeated power failures.
And with one security officer for every ten visitors, Sochi's inhabitants will have to make room for the 40,000 soldiers and policemen shuttled in to keep the peace.
