A handout image released by the Syrian opposition's Shaam News Network shows smoke rising following shelling from the Khalidiyah neighbourhood in Homs. More than 1,000 families were trapped in the city of Homs and being pounded by regime forces, a watchdog said, as the UN accused both sides in Syria's conflict of willingly escalating the violence.
