Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina became Pope Francis I, the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church Mar. 13, 2013.
The 76-year-old Archbishop of Buenos Aires was chosen to succeed Benedict XVI, who had resigned due to failing health.
Pope Francis I is the first pope from the Americas and also the first Jesuit to sit on the Vatican throne.
