Over 120 hurt in Bahrain clashes, dialogue sought

MANAMA (Reuters) - More than 120 protesters have been wounded in clashes with police in Bahrain this week, activists said on Wednesday, and a Shi'ite politician said contacts to resolve the Sunni-ruled Gulf monarchy's year-long crisis had begun.

Activists using the name "February 14 Youth Coalition" called for more demonstrations a day after protests to mark the first anniversary of a violently suppressed pro-democracy uprising.

"There were over 100 cases on Tuesday and 37 of them are bad, with head injuries and fractures," said a medic who works with researchers of an international organization and who asked not to be identified. "On Monday we had 20 people (wounded) in all villages around the country."

The medic said some casualties had been hit by birdshot pellets, which Bahraini police deny using.

Most of the wounded are treated in village homes or private health clinics because majority Shi'ite protesters fear they will be arrested if they go to government hospitals.

Ahmed, 20, said he had been struck by birdshot on Tuesday during clashes with police in one of several Shi'ite districts that ring Pearl Roundabout, the hub of last year's unrest and now a zone sealed by barbed wire and a National Guard camp.

"I threw a rock and then one of them (police) stood and shot straight at me. One of the pellets just missed my head," he said, sitting on a mattress on the ground in visible pain.

A male nurse who helps treat activists said he had removed all but one of the pellets, pinching the skin around one wound to demonstrate that the projectile was still inside.

The Interior Ministry said on Tuesday that rioters had caused chaos and vandalism in several villages, but gave no information on how many had been wounded or detained.

Bahrain, which hosts the U.S. Fifth Fleet, is aligned with the United States and oil giant Saudi Arabia in their disputes with Iran over its nuclear program and regional influence.

The island has been in turmoil since the uprising, with clashes between Shi'ites and riot police, while the opposition and government accuse each other of rejecting dialogue.

TENTATIVE DIALOGUE

However, Jasim Husain, a former lawmaker from the Shi'ite Wefaq party, the largest opposition faction, said Wefaq members had met Royal Court Minister Sheikh Khaled bin Ahmed, seen as a powerful figure in the ruling Al-Khalifa family.

"There is fresh attention now, but the authorities have to show seriousness," he said, without giving details. "The new thing is that the government is increasingly becoming a partner and realizing that the security cannot solve the issue."

Wefaq leader Sheikh Ali Salman called on youths this week to avoid into violent confrontation with police.

Opposition parties want Bahrain to move towards a fully-fledged parliamentary democracy where the elected house can form governments, a reform which would be a first in the Gulf and which would reduce the extensive powers of the ruling dynasty.

Bahraini forces backed by Saudi troops crushed last year's month-long revolt and 35 people, including security personnel, had been killed by June, when a state of emergency was lifted.

After international pressure, a commission of foreign legal experts investigated the unrest and revealed systematic torture and deaths in police custody during that period.

Violence has intensified since the commission's report in November and the overall death toll now exceeds 60.

Six U.S. activists who came to observe how police handled Tuesday's anniversary protests were detained and deported.

Bahraini rights campaigner Nabeel Rajab, who was also briefly detained on Tuesday, said later he might face charges of inciting an illegal gathering.

These so called protesters are not just attacking the police. They also attack the expats living in Bahrain. They should stop creating chaos and vandalism on the street first. Dialogues will not work this way.

I am an expat living in Bahrain for past 6 years. I have seen life of Bahrainis...If they earn BD500 a month, they will spend more than 80% on unneccesary expenses to show they have high standard of living. Even a Bahraini office boy in my company drives a bmw, has Iphone, a laptop.. they get everything they want from Govt. Free Education, Free medical expenses but still they talk about democracy. I want to know which democratic country in the world is very successful? US, Britain? NO they are succesful only in Media and in reality their own people are jobless.....I strongly beleive Kingdom rule to be the best unless the King is not fair.... but Bahrain King has done alot for his people and I being an expat has noticed it. These protestors should be sent to Nigeria, South africa and other parts of Asia where people are dieing without food....... and people here gets everything but still want to fight for more and more ...GREEDY PEOPLE

oh yeah? what are u doing there then?
people aren't pets, they don't need to be feed for free, they need to be paid for what they are sharing in their future of country. let me tell u do u know why they are not be shared in strategical positions and jobs, since they be dependent to foreigners for ever.
the biggest US military center in the region is in Bahrain, it has occupied nearly 30% of their land. can u imagine how big is the number, they r fed up with anti Palestine acts of the government, 70% of people are shia but less of their belief has been participated in governing the country.

i threw a rock ? what does he think that will do if it hits someone ? the police have no rights to defend themselves?
    • Sammy 3 months ago
The boy trowes a rock and you think the answer is shotgun? what if the same scenario is repeated in Syria will you give the same right to Syrian Police?
You must be American, aren't you, CNN thinks for.
    • Luay 3 months ago
Mark, Bahrainis were not throwing stones last year. They have started to this only recently after police have been treating them like insects. Police use birdshot pellets and tear gas very extensively, not to mention those who have been killed, arrested, tortured, or dismissed from their jobs. Please be fair and just.
    • John 3 months ago
No Mark, they didn't throw stones, they had weapons depots scattered around the area.
      - And yes Sammy, the answer is a shotgun, especially if the question is "I have a shotgun, are you sure you want to throw that rock?" They are police upholding the country's security. These people aren't being treated like insects. More like they are acting like pests. They have no argument. They are too lazy to work and bring themselves up. Just yesterday I watched a video of a PERSIAN Bahraini complaining he had to work at a non-experience job, although he had no education, NOR EXPERIENCE. How do they expect to get an experienced job if they don't want to do the time gaining the experience. All they want to do is throw stuff and complain. How about everyone encourage them to better themselves instead of violent acts and these useless marches. I am American, and while i don't agree with a lot of things in this world, the right for someone to defend themselves, especially someone stupid enough to throw a rock at someone with a weapon, even more so. They should be shot for being so stupid.
      - Luay, a large portion of those people "dismissed from their jobs" were brought back and allowed to return to work. Even though a lot of those jobs were in the public or government sector that they were dismissing their work to protest against. And if they were "dismissed from their work", why are they complaining about no work? THIS is the reason. They only want managers jobs yet have absolutely nothing to offer to any employer. And before you even start on the police and military argument, who in their right mind would hire people that try to overthrow the government and attack the security and police forces? Who? No one. Maybe the authorities knew what they were doing by not hiring them to begin with. Now for sure, based on their actions, they will never get these positions. Anyway, I'm gonna go smoke a cigarette outside and listen to the flash bangs. I live in Bahrain.

Asssalam O Aliakum & good afternoon everybody! I've gone through all of your comments and regretfully to state that almost all of you reported the wrong thing. It's the time to be honest with yourselves and with all those who are your co-nationals, regardless of sunni & shia. But let me remind you that Bahrain uprising is not an unprecedented story, infact one brother has described really true that it started two decades ago. Well let me introduce the custodians of two holy mosques, the saudis... Unfortunately to say whole the problem is created by Saudi Arabia, and Al Saud family. They are the one who by the help of British and US attacked Mecca & Madina in early 19th century and toppled the othmani caliphate. They (Al Saud family) introduced a new sect of Islam, named wahabi ism. Which was then allowed to flourish, and the result was the demolishment of Jannat ul Baqi. They introduce their own and funny beliefs and spread in Muslim ummah all over the world by spending the resources & wealth of their country. Unfortunately the story doesn't stop here. Saudi has concealed their faces by a slogan that they are the custodians of two holy mosques (Masjid ul Haram & Masjid un Nabavi) but in real Saudi Arabia keep conspiring Islam and specially shiites all over the world. This is an absolute disgrace for Muslim countries for conspiring against another Muslim country (Iran) and it's pattern (Hezbollah). Knowing that this was done by three Muslim countries, Saudi, UAE & Qatar in a cable released by wikileaks. No oe can eclipse this fact that any hostile power in the middle east that can confront Israel is Hizbollah and Iran. Even then these countries did this disgarecful act. The reason is only Iran & Hezbollah is shia Muslims and that's it. Now offen raised question by a common Muslim is whether these Al Saud family are able to be the custodians of two holy mosques after conspiring and being decended to the lowest depth of disgrace? I leave it to you all. Wassalam.

Mr. Munir! Be informed that shiites were there at the time of Our holy prophet Mohammad s.a.w.w. I can name some of them, like Salman Farsi r.a, Ammar Ibn Yasir r.a, Abu zar r.a, Miqdad bin aswad r.a, Meesam tumar r.a, Hajr ibn Adi Kundi r.a, Malik ibn Haris Ashtar r.a, Malik ibn Nowera r.a, Saad ibn Abada r.a, etc... You know what is the meaning of the word shia? It means the follower of Imam Ali (Take out the Arabic dictionary and find this word first) and if you go through the history thoroughly my nut friend you will come to know that there were more than 20 companions of the holy Prophet s.a.w.w, who didn't pledge Abu Bakar r.a. Instead of pledging him, they concealed and shelter themselves in the house of Imam Ali. All of them were prominent companions of the holy prophet s.a.w.w and all these names are even mentioned in the most authentic books of modern corner and history, the Sahee bokhari, Sahee muslim, tareekh e ibn e khaldoun, tareekh e Asim koofi etc etc. So my friend the seed of division was already implanted in the time of Mohammad s.a.w.w but it become a plant after his departure. You told tell me where comes shiites from as they were not there with Mohammad s.a.w.w in his time. My brother let me ask you where come sunnis from? Because at that time there were no sunni/ shia, then? So plz update your knowledge (which is really very pathetic)... May Allah guide you.

    • abbas g 3 months ago
      not with policemen
      but with Saudi's army
    • Fatima 3 months ago
Actually Abbas it is with unarmed policemen. There is no Saudi army here in Bahrain and I'm sure you would know that if you were living in this country. Any allegations of the Saudi king sending his army to crush what you call a "peaceful uprising" are - sadly - untrue. The policemen here in Bahrain don't even use rubber bullets (which by the way are completely legal and do not count as lethal).
    • Ef Kay 3 months ago
Fatima, you probably are misinformed.... the police do (and did) use firearms, google it and see.... seeing is believing! Having said that, I do not know which side is justified and i am in neither side.

Apart from Shia and Sunnis, no one has right to take the law in his/her hands. Any person who violate the law of any country should be punished hard and dealt with iron fist. It is conspiracy of the West to divide Muslims to weaken them. And they have fully succeeded in their bad intentions. We, Muslims, should understand the West conspiracy. May Allah bless us with unity and love.........

I think there is misconception of the stories that are told. There is no dought that the protestors are lead by Iraninian government. Therefore, we fear what is next. We have a problem with Shiia ideology. Look at the Sunni community in Iran. One million Sunni in Tehran with no mosque. 200 thousand Sunni in Shiraz and just 5 years or so ago a big mosque was allowed to be build by a businessman from Dubai. Otherwise they were to pray in villa and AThan (call for prayer) not to be heard publicaly. how many Husainiya and Shiia mosque you have in Bahrain or Kuwait or UAE? Do you see the ironi?

If they let me lead Bahrian for Only 3 Days , I will send all shieah to Iran by boat through the sea , Let them Try the Live thier , No one accepting shieah arrount the world I just remember the Jewish when Hitler ask the west to take them , No one accept them , Bring some people Sunni from different Nationality and keep them in Bahrian I hope My message could reach to the goverment of Bahrian .
