A woman has filed for divorce because she says she is tired of giving birth to handicapped babies.
The Arab woman has filed a case at the Ras Al Khaimah Family Guidance Department asking to be separated from her husband, who is also her cousin, because she blames him for their children being disabled. She attributed the problem to endogamy - marriage between relatives.
The wife told officials that she has been married to her husband for five years and they had one child who was handicapped. She gave birth to a second child who died after being born with mental and physical disabilities.
The woman presented medical reports to court officials which showed she also suffered a series of miscarriages due to congenital deformities in the unborn children.
Family guidance officials said they tried to talk to the wife to seek solutions to their problems with the help of her husband, so that they can remain a married couple, but the reconciliation efforts failed.
"The woman insisted that she wants to be separated from her husband to avoid facing similar problems,” said an official.
The official said that their case has been referred to the RAK Marriage Court. The wife’s lawyer, Mohammed Al Mouli, said the woman is legally within her rights to seek a divorce to avoid giving birth to more handicapped babies.
“Medical tests proved that endogamy can result in mentally and physically challenged children in many cases,” said Al Mouli. The lawyer noted that his client also told him that her husband has spent time outside of the UAE, leaving her alone with their disabled baby and paying all hospital bills.
