London, June 25 (IANS) An English-speaking tourist died after leaping from the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
The man climbed up the outside of the towere around 11.30 p.m. Sunday before jumping to his death, the Daily Mail reported Monday.
Police spotted the man climbing the 1,063-feet-tall tower, forcing them to evacuate and seal off the area.
The man reportedly jumped from around 1,000 feet, said Frederic Grosjean, deputy spokesman for the Paris firefighters' brigade.
Firefighters intervened again Monday when a woman, aged about 30, also attempted to jump from the tower. She was talked out of the suicide and lifted by a helicopter from the structure.
French engineer Gustave Eiffel built the tower for the Paris world fair in 1889. It is now visited by more than seven million people a year.
