6:51am Last year’s Best Actress winner Jennifer Lawrence presents the award for Best Actor. Matthew McConaughey wins the coveted statuette for his brilliant portrayal of AIDS patient Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club .

 

6:45am Daniel Day-Lewis announces best actress nominees. Australian star Cate Blanchett clinches the award for best actress for her remarkable performance in Woody Allen's tragic comedy Blue Jasmine .

 

6:33am Angelina Jolie and Sidney Poitier present the award for Achievement in Directing. The winner is Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity . The film has received seven Oscars so far.

 

Prior to Academy Awards, Gravity already won six BAFTA Awards, including Outstanding British Film and Best Director, the Golden Globe Award for Best Director, and seven Critics Choice Awards.

 

6:24am Oscar winners Robert De Niro and Penelope Cruz announce the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. The Oscar goes to John Ridley for 12 Years a Slave . The film is based on the memoir written by Solomon Northup, portrayed in the film by Oscar-nominated Chiwetel Ejiofor.

6:26am The Oscar for Best Original Screenplay goes to Spike Jonze for Her . It is Jonze’s fourth nomination and first win.

6:16am The Oscar for Best Original Song goes to ‘Let It Go’ from Frozen . The songwriter, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, is now one of a few artists who have what is referred to as an EGOT: An Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony.

 

 

6:12am Jamie Foxx and Jessica Biel present the nominees for Best Original Score. The Oscar goes to Steven Price: Gravity wins for the sixth time tonight.

 

6:08am John Travolta presents Idina Menzel, who performs the Oscar-nominated song ‘Let It Go’ from Academy Award winning animated feature Frozen .

5:29am The Academy Award for Best Film Editing goes to Gravity in the film’s fifth win in this year’s Oscars.

 

5:26am Amy Adams and Bill Murray present the Award for Achievement in Cinematography. Emmanuel Lubezki wins for Gravity . This is Gravity ’s fourth win tonight.

 

5:24am President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Cheryl Boone Isaacs acquaints the audience with the plans for establishing the Academy’s Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles by 2017.

 

5:22am " Pizza anyone?" Brad Pitt passes out paper plates and napkins as a pizza delivery boy makes his way by Ellen DeGeneres' side through the bejeweled crowd, handing out slices to the stars.

 

 

5:12am Two-time Oscar winner Christopher Waltz (Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained) presents the award for Best Supporting Actress. Lupita Nyong'o wins for her stunning performance in Steve McQueen's harrowing slavery drama 12 Years a Slave .

"When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you're from, your dreams are valid,” Nyong'o said at the end of an eloquent, tearful acceptance speech.

5:10am The Oscar for Best Sound Editing also goes to Gravity, a British-American 3D science-fiction thriller and space drama . This marks the third Academy Award for the film tonight as it already won Oscar for Sound Mixing and for Achievement in Visual Effects .

4:48am Ewan McGregor and Viola Davis present the award for Best Foreign Language Film. The Oscar goes to Italy’s The Great Beauty .

This is the 11th Oscar for Italy. Directed by Paolo Sorrentino, the visually stunning film is reminiscent of Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita.  

The film considered the favorite to win the Academy Award, follows an aging writer's reflections on life and his search for meaning among Rome's idle high society.

 

4:51am The second set of Best Picture nominees is introduced: Nebraska , Her and Gravity . 

4:40am Oscar winner Kevin Spacey presents the winners of this year’s Governors Awards: Angela Lansbury, Steve Martin, Piero Tosi and Angelina Jolie.

4:37am Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper ( American Hustle ) presents the award for Best Documentary Feature. The winner is 20 Feet from Stardom. 

Egyptian-American production The Square was among the nominees for Best Documentary Feature. The nomination marks Egypt's first time onto the 'Best Documentary' list and in the Oscars as a whole, with the exception of Omar El-Sherif's 'Best Supporting Actor' nomination in 1962 for his role in Hollywood production Lawrence of Arabia.

The Square is an immersive experience that transports viewers into the intense emotional dramas and personal stories behind the January 2011 uprising and its aftermath of military and short-lived Muslim Brotherhood rule.

The film won the People's Choice Documentary Award at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2013, and the Audience Award at Sundance 2013.

The Square producers tweeted "Our Oscars story may be over, but the story of Egypt and TheSquare goes on. Our journey continues!"

4.34am The Oscar for Best Documentary Short goes to The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life . Directed by Malcom Clarke, the documentary film is about 109 year-old Alice Herz Sommer, the world's oldest pianist and holocaust survivor, who passed away one week ago.

4:30am The award for Best Live Action Short Film is presented. The Oscar goes to Helium .

4:24am Zac Efron presents Karen O, who performs her Oscar-nominated ‘The Moon Song’ from Best Picture contender Her .

4:21am Joseph Gordon Levitt and Emma Watson present the award for Achievement in Visual Effects. The Oscar goes to Gravity .

4:17am Two-time Oscar winner Sally Field presents a compilation of movie clips paying homage to real life heroes portrayed in the cinema.

4:14am McConaughey and Novak present the award for Best Animated Feature as well. The winner is Frozen .

This is the first time that the studio founded by the animation pionee r, Walt Disney Animation Studios, wins t he Oscar for best animated feature, a category created in 2002.

The first Academy Award for an animated feature film was a special honor given to Walt Disney in 1939 for t he innivation of S now White and the Seven Dwarfs . Child actress Shirley Temple presented Disney with a full-sized go ld Oscar statuette and seven miniature ones.

3:40am Last year’s Best Supporting Actress winner Anne Hathaway ( Les Miserables ) takes the stage to present the award for Best Supporting Actor. The nominees are: Barkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips Bradley Cooper, American Hustle Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave Jonah Hill, The Wolf of Wall Street Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club The Oscar goes to Jared Leto for his role in Dallas Buyers Club .

“Thank you mom for teaching me to dream,” Leto says. “To all the dreamers out there watching us tonight, in places like the Ukraine and Venezuela…we’re thinking of you tonight.”

3:32am Comedian and day-time talk show Ellen DeGeneres, back to host the Academy Awards for a second time, says: “Welcome to the Oscars. For those of you watching from around the world, it’s been a tough week for us here. It’s been raining. Thank you for your prayers,” to the night’s first round of applause from the audience.

12:40am After a huge storm hit right before the Oscars weekend, soaking the red carpet, tonight's skies are grey but dry. The risk of rain still looming, organizers are hoping for the rain to hold off until the stars are inside the Dolby Theatre.

12am Stars are about to start walking the red carpet, ahead of the coveted Academy Awards. Keeping you up to speed, here's a reminder of the nominees for this year's Oscars.

11:30pm Egyptian-American filmmaker Jehane Noujaim, and director of The Square, one of three Arab films vying for 86th Academy Awards, will be attending tonight's ceremony, along with Palestine's Hany Abu-Assad and Yemen's Sarah Ishaq.

For Middle East viewers, the 86th Annual Academy Awards will be televised on the TV channel Dubai One starting at 12am Cairo Local Time.

The live feed will begin with the red carpet proceedings before the official ceremony begins. The three hours show will be hosted by comedian and day-time talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.

This year's Academy Awards sees three Arab productions nominated in three different categories: The Square by Egyptian-American filmmaker Jehane Noujaim is up for Best Documentary Feature, Palestine's Omar by Hany Abu-Assad runs for Best Foreign Language Film and Yemen's Karama Has No Walls by Sarah Ishaq is a contender for Best Documentary Short.

This year's Oscar race is one of the most competitive in recent memory, with two films vying for the coveted Best Picture award with almost equal chances: Alfonso Cuarón's sci-fi stunner  Gravity  and Steve McQueen's historical epic  12 Years a Slave . Others have been hailing David O. Russell's crime caper  American Hustle  as a possible surprise winner. The president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, called it the best line-up "in the last decade or so."

After three days of rain that soaked parts of the red carpet along Hollywood Boulevard, organizers remain confident that 86th Annual Academy Awards will go off without a hitch.
