It appears that dressing in lederhosen is no longer confined to Oktoberfest and The Sound Of Music!

Traditionally worn by boys and men during outdoor activities and physical labor, Lederhosen is a regional clothing found in the Alpine areas of Germany and Austria.

Subsequently the garment was deemed unsuitable for city dwellers, as those who wore it were labelled “uncultured peasants.”

It makes perfect sense for Lagerfeld to return to this region for inspiration, seeing how it was at hotel Schloss Mittersill in Austria where Coco Chanel found her original inspiration to create the iconic braid trimmed jacket, a scene played out in this Chanel short film:

Lederhosen eventually became popular folk festival and beer garden attire.

Now, its influence on women’s fashion can be seen as a sort of modern day liberation, an extension of the already prominent trend of women dressing in menswear. As seen on the runways of Chanel, Alessandra Rich, Dior and Delpozo.
