Domestic violence plagues Iraq

The UN estimates that one in five women in Iraq suffer from domestic abuse, in a society where a woman leaving her husband for any reason is considered grounds for punishment.

One rights group says cases of abuse appear to be on the rise since the fall of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein nearly nine years ago.

But even for women who do manage to escape their abuse, there are few places in the country they can go to seek refugee.

Al Jazeera's Jane Arraf has this exclusive report from the capital, Baghdad.

    I want to raise this question. Does the people who are committing abuse against these women really civilize(d)? These women existed in this world to experience fair treatment and happiness as what others experienced. To the peole who abused women of Iraq, Allah is not sleeping. He watches you in all your actions and read all your thoughts. Surely, at the end of your life. You will realized how much sorry you are for what you have done. Allah Akbar!

      Dear Alexander, mAY aLLAH GUIDE you even if you are not a muslim, But the question you have raised is really a concern, but I have a more important question to YAHOO AND THIS ANTI ISLAMIC MEDIA. IN AMERICA, and EUROPEAN countries every three min. ( 3 min.) a woman gets RAPED . does the peoples who are Raping the poor women in US & europe really civilize(d)? Arent the USA & EUROPEAN women existed in this world to experience fair treatment and happiness and a modest status as what others experienced.     I'm from Iraq, and I have many relatives there as my family goes there every now and then but i assure you that this is complete BS, I mean all over the world women tell their husband, father, brother that they are going out...and if they go out without letting anyone know YES there might be an arguement as into why you did not let us know! People worry about their kids, daughters, wifes........and that goes for young men too! I am not saying it doesn't happen, it does, but it is exaggerated on the media...We have more women driving on the streets, more women in Univ. and much more in government jobs! MEDIA people get your stories straight!

    These things happen most often in USA. It may rarely be happening there because of the absence of law. Imagine if law is not present in USA how they all treat themselves. A moment of light went in Los-angles and the whole city filled with chaos. Islam teaches to remain humble with your family friends and every one. This is not nature of individual person on which these things depends.

    No religion has given so much respect as much as Islam has given she is Queen of your home. Such a value in Islam given to Women. Just imagine those who are misguided muslims are subjected to such crimes. Hence, Islam is the best only religion in world which true.     I think this is lies, because if you make survey about how is the nicest man in treating woman, you will find Iraqi one. If the lady respect her husband depending on what Islam asks her to do, then the husband will never treat her badly. Iraqi men are so nice GOD bless all Iraqi people.
