Iran to launch domestic internet in May

The Iranian Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Reza Taghipour, announced that the Islamic State has set forth plans to launch its first stage of domestic internet by May.

According to Iranian sources, the fast launch of the network was set on the country’s priority list, which was first revealed in March, and officially began its first phase in the new Iranian New Year that began on March 20th.

The national internet engine aims to provide Iranians with sources that the government and ministry deem suited to the needs of the people. It will also minimise allegations of spying. Taghipour stressed that the creation of a local internet will protect Iranians and keep out western intrusions.

A local data centre will be set up to create a search engine and domestic e-mail service, which are currently in their final phase. Further details about the project are yet to be revealed by Iranian officials.
