Indians among world's happiest people: poll

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Despite economic woes, wars, conflicts and natural disasters the world is a happier place today than it was four years ago and Indonesians, Indians and Mexicans seem to be the most contented people on the planet.

More than three-quarters of people around the globe who were questioned in an international poll said they were happy with their lives and nearly a quarter described themselves as very happy.

"The world is a happier place today and we can actually measure it because we have been tracking it," said John Wright, senior vice president of Ipsos Global, which has surveyed the happiness of more than 18,000 people in 24 countries since 2007.

But he added that expectations of why people are happy should be carefully weighed.

"It is not just about the economy and their well being. It is about a whole series of other factors that make them who they are today."

Brazil and Turkey rounded out the top five happiest nations, while Hungary, South Korea, Russia, Spain and Italy had the fewest number of happy people.

Perhaps proving that money can't buy happiness, residents of some of the world biggest economic powers, including the United States, Canada and Britain, fell in the middle of the happiness scale.

"There is a pattern that suggests that there are many other factors beyond the economy that make people happy, so it does provide one element but it is not the whole story," said Wright.

"Sometimes the greatest happiness is a cooked meal or a roof over your head," he explained. "Relationships remain the No. 1 reason around the world where people say they have invested happiness and maybe in those cultures family has a much greater degree of impact."

Regionally Latin America had the highest number of happy people, followed by North America, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East and Africa. Only 15 percent of Europeans said they were very happy.

On a more personal note married couples tended to be happier than singles but men seemed to be as content as women. Education and age also had an impact with more people under 35 saying they are very happy than 25-49 year olds. Higher education also equated with higher happiness.

if you have simple life, then you'll be happy with simple things and simple events/occations.
if you live a complicated life "a life that's driven by money", then for sure you'll find it hard to be happy with simple things also. so your happiness would come with a price tag!

We are happy people also irrespective of whatever situation or circumstances gives us, anything that life gives us is a reason to celebrate! LIFE in itself is a reason to celebrate, HAHA!!! Maybe Philippines is a small country that they didn't notice us, and we don't brag or lift our own chairs, we just let our smiles do the talking! Keep smiling guys!!! MABUHAY PHILIPPINES!!!

Rodel, I too think Philipinos should have been there in the list. Although i am from India, i think people from philipanes are more happier, even with low paid salaries, than people from other places in Dubai. Its all in the mind, happiness, not in material things. The result of such a survey keeps changing it seems, last year, i read it was philipinos.

If the survey result is correct, mainly the reason for indians to be happy may be because, most of the indians live for others say after thirtees or forties on age aspect.Secondly following the traditional and cultural ways on life style with out crossing the limitations on their roles. On money aspect saving becomes a vital and no wasteages.

      • ahmed 3 months ago
Yes, India is a very rich country, anyway, don't forget that the few controls a very huge amount of wealth;despite the progress in science and economy, without solving the social class disparity--poor people will remain forever poor.

People I am Arabic person and I live in India in 1987 for 4 years , and I did not like the comment bellow about India , India is good country and people are very kind and they like to help you always and being poor weather in India or any other places there is nothing wrong or shame on that and does not mean poor people are not happy , many of the poor people are more happy than rich people , In general and not in specific country . Allah his almighty Respect Poor or he honor Poor by letting them enter the heaven in One day before Rich as we Muslim believe and it is mention on the Hadiath and we as Muslim Our Prophet Mohammad Peace Upon Him he live poor and he dead Poor , even Issa & Mosa Peace upon them , so Money will not give you the happienes which will give you the happenies is to know that you are doing some thing good that ALLAH his Almighty will accepted from you and you feel you have a mission on this live you need to do it as our prophet Mohammad peace upon him teach us to do , then you will be really happy and there is meaning of your life .

I am an Indian, proud to here this news and we are happy because our parents teach us to love one another, and they showed us how to love. In India there are many relegion and they all pray to GOD. All the religion including Muslims, we do one time marriage, even if one life partner die, the other partner will remain as single and look after the children. So the child is getting love from the parent.
Most of the other countries after marriage and children, The parents wants to get Divorce and the child won't get love from parents. these type children always disturbed in their life. they will be unhappy in their life.
By GOD grace India is much better than others. I wish all the countries and all the people should be happy and live in this one world as children of GOD. MAY THE GOD BLESS ALL THE PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD WITH PEACE AND JOY.
      Antony.
