Fashion week has always been an ‘exclusive’ event that only socialites, celebrities and fashion editors are privy to. But that’s all about to change.

In a fashion first, French style house Givenchy has announced it’ll be opening it’s doors to the general public, allowing anyone to view the brand’s SS16 collection.

But there’s a catch – you have to be lucky enough to snap up one of today’s free tickets AND be in New York in a couple of weeks (on September 11, awkwardly) when the show takes place. Guess that counts us out then.

Some 820 tickets were available on the brand’s NYFW website today and another 280 tickets will go to students and faculty of local fashion school.

It’s a clever move for the brand, which has just opened a giant new shop in the city and is subsequently showcasing its new collection in the big apple – instead of Paris – for the first time. It’ll mean that potential US shoppers will quite literally be able to take a first look at the fashion line, before snapping up their most coveted items in the brand spanking new store.

Of course, most of those lucky enough to score tickets probably won’t be able to afford the brand’s high-end garments, but they will undoubtedly shout about the show and their favourite items on social media – possibly the best form of advertising for the new store.

Riccardo Tisci, Givenchy’s creative director, says he’s long to open one of his shows to the public for many years.

“You know, fashion is amazing and very exclusive,” he told WWD. “But [I’ve long thought] one day I would love to do a show where anybody — which is the reality — could be a part of it.”

He admits he’s also always longed to show a collection in NYC – and to take his mother there with him.

“My father died when I was a baby, but my mom always said to me that my father would always say to her, ‘one day I will take you to the Big Apple.’ It never happened,” he said. “So in my blood, in my dream, in my thoughts, has always been this: ‘I’m the only boy of the family. One day I will bring my mom to America.’ And I did, I did a few years ago when I won the CFDA [International Award].”

It’s not known where exactly in New York the Givenchy show will take place, but Tisci did reveal that it will be held “on the street.” There will, however, be a live stream of the show that anyone can watch – but it’s not quite the same, is it?
