Firefighters return to scene of massive restaurant blaze

Firefighters returned to the scene of a blaze that tore through a restaurant near St Austell. Crews extinguished hotspots at what remains of the Kingswood Restaurant on Friday evening.

It comes after the conclusion of an investigation into the cause of the inferno which broke out in the early hours of Friday, April 26. Dozens of firefighters battled the large fire which destroyed much of the building.

There has been no official word about the cause of the blaze but Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed its investigation has been completed and the property has been handed back over to the owners.

The fire broke out at 1.56am and crews from St Austell and Mevagissey initially responded. They were followed by crews from St Dennis, Fowey and Lostwithiel fire stations and the aerial ladder platform from Truro.

A fire service statement said: "On arrival a fire involving a restaurant kitchen was discovered. Crews made pumps six and requested the attendance of the aerial ladder platform from Truro. Specialist vehicles including the Incident Command Unit from Launceston, the Operational Support Vehicle from St Austell and the welfare vehicle from Perranporth also formed part of the attendance."

Crews sectorised the incident and made good progress. The incident was scaled down and crews continued to monitor the situation throughout the day.

It was confirmed at 6.30pm that a fire investigation had been completed and the property handed back over to the owners. Photos taken in the aftermath show the devastation caused by the blaze.

There were reports of smoke emerging from the rubble on Friday evening. Firefighters went back and put out hotspots. Three crews from St Austell, Mevagissey and St Dennis returned to the site to extinguish them.
