Double denim: The new, cool way to wear a Canadian tuxedo

Once upon a time, the Canadian tuxedo was something to be mocked. Recall Britney and Justin’s matching denim on denim outfits at the 2001 VMAs or your dad’s ’70s all-denim leisure suit.

If you can manage to erase those images from your mind, you’ll find the Canadian tuxedo has made quite the stylish resurgence with celebrities and fashionistas. Take the always-stylish couple Pharrell Williams and Helen Lasichanh, who made denim on denim look – dare we say – cool at Sunday’s VMAs.

Not quite convinced? These updated ways to wear double denim might just change your mind. Scroll through the slideshow above for our styling tips on how to wear double denim.

Luxurious details: At last year’s Milan Fashion Week, Gucci sent a luxurious denim suit down the runway and we were pretty impressed. The bold gold buttons and high neckline of the top paired with culotte-style pants gave the Canadian tux a look that is totally modern.

Denim skirts: Don’t worry, we’re not talking about the ragged hem denim minis of yore. We tend to default to pants when we think of denim on denim, but a great curve-hugging knee-length skirt, like this one worn by none other than Mrs. West, paired with a loose chambray top and strappy heels is a great way to update your Canadian tuxedo.

Adding a blazer or jacket: If the denim on denim look is too much, a blazer or jacket to break up the look is a more subtle solution. Check out Tom Ford’s take on the look, adding a tailored blazer and letting the denim cuffs peek out. Perfection.

Contrasting washes: If you’ve tried the look and it’s just not sitting right, it could be a wash issue. You might have to experiment to get the look just right but the key is not wearing matching washes. Try a dark denim jean with a lighter denim or chambray shirt, a la Miranda Kerr.

Accessorize: It doesn’t have to be a loud Chanel brooch as per Beyonce, but a necklace, belt or a patterned scarf can take your all denim look to new heights. Hey, if it works for Queen Bey, it works for us.

Denim jumpsuit: Denim jumpsuits don’t sound overly appealing, especially if you’ve been an avid “Orange is the New Black” viewer. That is until you see how Rihanna styled hers with black pumps, a little cuffing at the hem and a dash of cleavage.
