Deportivo La Coruna fan dies after violent clash with Atletico Madrid supporters

Trouble erupted before Atletico’s home Primera Division match with Depor yesterday morning and resulted in the death of a man in his 40s.

The man, who has not been named officially, was still alive when firefighters pulled him out of the Manzanares river near Atletico’s home ground.

In a critical condition, he was taken to the San Carlos Clinic in Madrid by ambulance but died shortly after.

The running battles between around 180 rival ‘ultras’ reportedly started around 09:00 in the vicinity of Atletico’s Vicente Calderon stadium ahead of a match that began at midday local time.

Gil Marin said: “It’s disgusting, that scum has no place in football.

"I only hope they identify those responsible and they can’t repeat such deplorable acts as these.”

The Spanish Football League (LFP) claimed they attempted to have the match postponed, but Atletico won 2-0 thanks to goals from Arda Turan and Saul.

Elsewhere, Sevilla scored four times in the final 25 minutes to record a morale-boosting 5-1 win over Andalusian rivals Granada.

Sevilla, who had taken just one point from their previous three league games, went ahead through Carlos Bacca but Granada were level by the break thanks to Youssef El Arabi’s penalty.

That is the way the game stayed until the 66th minute, when Sevilla got their noses back in front through Ever Banega and then further goals from Bacca, Stephane Mbia and Kevin Gameiro comple-ted a one-sided scoreline.

In Cordoba, Luciano Vietto and Ikechukwu Uche were on target as Villarreal won 2-0 to go sixth.
