Christians 'face deportation' in Saudi Arabia

Dozens of Ethiopian Christians are facing deportation from Saudi Arabia after authorities raided a private prayer service in Jeddah, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW).

The group was reportedly arrested in a private home in Jeddah in mid-December. Most of the 35 detainees are women, and three of them told the US-based group that they were strip-searched by police.

HRW said it spoke to three detainees, two women and one man, by telephone from prison.

One of them said the men were beaten, and also complained of inadequate medical care and poor sanitation at the jail.

"Two of the women said that officials there forced the women to strip, and then an officer inserted her finger into each of the women’s genitals, under the pretext of searching for illegal substances hidden inside their bodies," the report said.

"Officers also kicked and beat the men in Buraiman prison, and insulted them as 'unbelievers'."

The group now faces possible deportation for "illicit mingling," though HRW said Saudi Arabia has no law defining that offence.

Unrelated men and women are forbidden to mingle in public, though they are generally allowed a degree of freedom in private.

    'Intolerant ways'

Saudi Arabia officially bans the public practice of any religion other than Islam.

The kingdom said in 2006 that it would allow non-Muslims to practice their religions in private, but the kingdom's notorious religious police continue to periodically crack down on private services.

The Saudi interior ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

"While King Abdullah sets up an international interfaith dialogue centre, his police are trampling on the rights of believers of others faiths," said Christoph Wilcke, a senior Middle East researcher at HRW, referring to a Saudi-funded "centre for interreligious and intercultural dialogue" established in Vienna last year.

"The Saudi government needs to change its own intolerant ways before it can promote religious dialogue abroad."

THERE will be no PEACE on EARTH if we are always arguing about religion....LETS ARGUE about the LOVE that our GOD (CREATOR) gave to us.....and there will be PEACE!....and PEACE start or begin from INDIVIDUAL not from what we so called RELIGION.......RELIGION will not SAVE US and this has nothing to do about SALVATION?....BUT......LOVE......will do!

If only people of the world work together towards PEACE, then peace will eventually reign the world. Let's accept the fact that division of faith is existing a long time ago, and it's not about that division that should go overboard in one's spiritual principle, but of a peaceful co-existence with the outsiders. Respect of one's own religious rights and the freedom to exercise it is what's acceptable to God. If all religions were founded on LOVE everything is tolerated. But, if it teaches hatred, jealousy, competition, race towards who is who God, which is which truth, conflict is endless and WILL reign the world till its last...

Suresh, let me break it down for you, Suresh. In Islam, if there is a truce or an understanding between a party of the Muslims with a party of the non-Muslims on governmental scale and there are strict guidelines to be followed by both, that needs to be respected, like in the Hudaibian Truce. That does not mean that that party of Muslims needs to forgo their national policies. There is no hypocrisy here, in fact, Saudi Arabia or Al-Hijaaz and the Arabian peninsula, have strict instructions from the Last Prophet mankind Muhammad peace be upon him, to clear if from any public display/house of worship except Islamic. This was after a tireless 20 plus years of struggle against idolworship and the afiliation to pseudogods, thus purifying it by Affirming only the Original worship of THe One True God, namely Allah. (in arabic the word for a god or God is اله pronounced e-laaahh* but Allah (pronounced: Ulllaahh*) is the Personal Name of God, as He points this out in His Communication to us, via The Holy Korraan* - ; * listen to it using Google translate via Google Chrome, type in and click the microphone button, and listen). The fact that some gulf countries have decided to not go with this order of the Prophet SAWS is for God to judge them and for those who can, advise them, and for the rest to follow, as that is also another command by Allah SWT and His prophet SAWS, which when put into context overrides the objection of the masses of their choices in governance so long as they meet some pertinant Islamic activities, which they have allowed, like the freedom to call the adhaan to pray to conduct Islamic affairs. So, may Allah protect and forgive us and the rest of the Muslims.

I am an Ethiopian muslim live in KSA for a long time
I would like to say some thing truth about KSA rule depending on the issue that written by al jazeera, I am not denying about an Ethiopian suffering in jail specially those Christians who have arrested in the condition of group praying with an illegal actions like alcohol, and gathering non relative male and female in one place e.t.c., the punishment for those violated the rule in KSA is for all not only for non muslims, first of all we must know KSA is an Islamic state, every one come to KSA either muslim or non muslim knows that well, if we canot respect the rule of the country we have a right to leave or not come, she must have a rule to keep the sharia, even we in our small house if we did not put rule we can not manage our house well, am I correct or no? to accept some truths like this we must become pure from bad and backward hate to Islamic states, in KSA if u go in right path no one touch u in bad, we do not assume like we live in paradise we are living in earth may some time happen bad actions beside of some persons at this time our justice tested, if we twist the topic to say some thing bad in the state or religion we never change any thing only wasting time & on the contrary the issue gets worse. we must look for local solution by justice.

We Ethiopians live in KSA knew very well what our some bad peoples do, from wide spread theft and promotion of alcohol e.t.c why we do not against them ? & why we do not hand over to keep our image and our country image clean? We know well most of non muslims come to KSA from Ethiopia by the name of muslims to make alcohol or adultery to become rich in short time why we do not talking up on them!? The only way to keep our right is our self not HRW or some other instuitions, we must know there is some bad foundations or sides their aim is to show the image of islam is bad in the back of some issues, But our religion is saves by allah, where is the foundation named by HRW when Ethiopian youngs die in their way to come to KSA by illegal way?
