Dubai's vital Emirates Road has been renamed Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road after the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
The name was changed following a directive by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum in honour of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed's contribution to the UAE.
"I have issued a decision today to rename "Emirates Road" to "Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed road". I wanted the first decision of 2013 to be related to a character associated with achievements. Emirates Rd is a vital artery that connects & unites the Emirates as my brother Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed who unites and defends the UAE," Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum said on his official Facebook page.
The road, also known as E311, is one of the main highways that links Dubai to the rest of the emirates and stretches across 140km, 73km of which fall in Dubai.
According to Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), 100 main road signs have already been modified, with another 150 being changed over the next few days.
