Australian sentenced to 500 lashes in Saudi Arabia

SYDNEY (AP) — An Australian man has been sentenced to 500 lashes and a year in a Saudi Arabian jail after being convicted of blasphemy, officials said Wednesday.

The 45-year-old man, identified by family members as Mansor Almaribe of southern Victoria state, was detained in the holy city of Medina last month while making the Muslim pilgrimage of hajj. Family members told Australian media that Saudi officials accused him of insulting the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, a violation of Saudi Arabia's strict blasphemy laws.

Australia's ambassador in Saudi Arabia has contacted Saudi authorities in a bid for leniency, the Department of Foreign Affairs said. Consular officials are providing support for the man and his family in Australia.

"The Australian government is universally opposed to corporal punishment," the department said in a statement.

Almaribe was convicted of blasphemy on Tuesday and initially sentenced to two years in jail and 500 lashes. The court later reduced his jail sentence.

Almaribe's son Jamal told The Age newspaper that his father was reading and praying as part of a group when he was arrested.

Almaribe's son Mohammed said he feared for his father's well-being. "Five hundred slashes on his back, and he has back problems. I wouldn't think he'd survive 50," he told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

The Arabic word 'Islam' simply means 'submission', and derives from a word meaning 'peace'. ... makes one wonder about the reaction to this story by muslims...what happens to compassion and forgiveness ,,,

if every sinner will be dealt with compassion and forgiveness, why Allah prepared fire for sinners.....there should be repentance..to be forgiven...forgiveness should be earned not enforced..

If he has done blasphemy, he should be hanged to death. No body has right to insult the prophets, his companions or even Jesus (may peace be upon him), one of the strongest messenger of GOD Almighty. If any body does this, his punishment should be death penalty.

Blasphemy against God, Yes. Blasphemy against mohammad & his companions, No. Mohammad and his companions are just humans. They are fallible. If anyone say anything wrong about these humans, only God has the right to punish them.

how can you respect anything about islam when it is obviously not Godly?
    • x2  •  5 months ago
Do you know about lashes in Islam? The whipping should not be with high hand i.e. the elbow should never leave the body touch. The whip must never cut the skin. The whipping should not be on one place of the body. If the convict is not he should not be whipped until he gains health. If there is a doubt that he will get seriously ill then whipping should not be on one time and should divided like 20 lashes per session. Do you still think it is cruel than what America has done in Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib or what is being done in any democratic country's torture centers in the name of investigations?

If the guy who committed blasphemy was a saudi prince they would have looked the other way... It's sad what this country does to poor and common civilians. The rich and the famous are the ones allowed to commit crimes in saudi. I would have felt different if this country was a real islamic state the treats people equally. Do you want to hear about what happens to maids in saudi and how people treat them? Why dont their owners get lashes and jail time for abusing a human being? I am a muslim and would deffinitely be offended if anyone cursed the companions of the prophet but please saudi get over yourself and try to be just to human beings.

In response to Eriol, how dare you call Islam "not Godly"??? Have you read about it? Have you seen how these people pray to God Almighty 5 times a day? Have you seen them fast the whole month of Ramadan? Do you have any encounter with these men talking to them on how they worship God, follow His Prophets & Messengers and do acts of worship only to Him? Think about it man!!! Before saying anything against anybody and acting as if, as if you know them very well, think first. Don't be so naive, be responsible.

We have to respect and honour anything that have to do with Islam. Blasphemy is not a good act and should be frown at, however, the man should be pardon.

severe punishment is good to stop others from encouraging this type of behaviour , but for muslim more important is to preach and make him a better muslim...Not to lash him and let him rot in jail......if the Govt is made of sensible people then find out Y he acted in such a manner...either release him on mental grounds or make him a better muslim...Else the govt along with this guy can GO TO HELL......
    • waqif  •  5 months ago
This punishment is self made does not belongs to islamic rules. Saudies are wahabies the call them on the right path & the whole muslims on wrong path. But unfortunately the lack the ability to understand true meanings of Islam. Because of their narrow mentality. If that is punishment for insulting few people (whom they call copanions but infact they were the deviants & they made changes into Islam after the death of Prophet), then what is the punishment for bulldozing the graves of Hazarat Fatima (Daughter of Prophet & leader of all women s in Paradise) and Imam Hussan (Grandson of Prophet & leader of youths in Paradise) and many other Companions of Prophet? is this not blasphemy???????????????????????????????

People who dont respect Islam they shud better do their stupid things outside holy places or they will be punished in the same way .... Saudi Govt. must stand on their decision as disrespecting in the holy city, in the holy month at the holy places infront of millions of muslims deserve not less than Death penalty.
    • rumej  •  5 months ago
Every religion need to be respected, but if someone made mistake he/she should not be pounished like this. He made mistake, he should be forgiven. "GOD" never punish anybody whether your mistake is big or small. YOu punished one person, but millions will hate you for what you have done. think aboutr it. I am not Muslim but i believe that Muslim are generous, so prove it.

Peace and Love... This is what GOD wants us to do, instead we are killing each other and dragging each other down, GOD only has the right to punish. We are all sons and daughters of GOD, respect each other love each other.. Learn how to forgive.. " GOD Bless us all "

We Muslims does not insult other religions and as according to Islam we respect all other religions and faiths including the people who follow it. Why is that you guys hate Islam and Muslims so much? It says the state of your devotion towards your religion.

If he really has done that purposefully then he has to be punished because he asked for it and I do not know about the number of lashes and the sentence anyway.

This is for one of the comments Yes there is a group called "wahabies" who follow "wahabism" founded by Ibn Abdul Wahab and it is a misguided group in Islam.
