Art Alert: Japanese violinist brings new 'Little Night Music' to Falaki Theatre

Takao Hyakutome

Opening on 13 April the annual Cairo Contemporary Music Days 2014, Japanese violinist Takao Hyakutome will present the Egyptian première of Vykintas Baltakas’ Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (A Little Night Music). Organised by the European-Egyptian Contemporary Music Society (EECMS), the event will run until 17 April.

The evening will also include Luciano Berio’s Sequenza VIII, works for violin by Mateu Malondra and Gamal Abdel Rahim.

According to EECMS, Baltakas comments on Eine Kleine Nachtmusik as follows: "This miniature, played on only one string on the violin, is a lullaby which I’ve been singing to my daughters for several years. My music in this piece was partially inspired by fractal ideas where a large image is created of many small images of the same shape. I couldn't think of a more fitting title than Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. However, this is the only reference point to Mozart, borrowed with great respect."

The Cairo Contemporary Music Days will feature various new works by Egyptian and international contemporary composers.

Programme: Sunday 13 April at 8pm Falaki Theatre, 24 Al-Falaki St, Off Mohamed Mahmoud St, American University in Cairo (Downtown Campus), Cairo
