Afghan policeman suspect in killing of U.S. officers: sources

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan authorities said on Sunday they believe an Afghan police intelligence officer may have been involved in the shooting deaths of two U.S. officers inside the interior ministry a day earlier, prompting NATO to recall all its staff from ministries.

Abdul Saboor, 25, is the main suspect in the killing, which took place at close range well inside the heavily fortified ministry in the centre of the capital, Kabul, senior security sources told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

"Abdul Saboor is at large right now. He is the main suspect for us but we can not draw any conclusions over whether or not he is the killer," one of the sources said, adding that CCTV footage shows that Saboor had access to the Command and Control Centre where the slain Americans were found.

The killing of the American officers took place as rage gripped the country for a fifth straight day over the burning of the Muslim holy book at a NATO base, despite an apology from U.S. President Barack Obama.

If the shootings are found to be linked to Afghan forces, new questions will arise about Taliban infiltration as well as their ability to secure Afghanistan once NATO combat forces withdraw in 2014.

The Taliban took responsibility for the American deaths.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai repeated his plea for calm and restraint on Sunday. "I hope people will be calm and be assured that we are seriously pursuing this matter," he said of the burning of the Korans.

Riots across the country killed 29 people and wounded 200 more, Karzai said, including the shooting of two U.S. soldiers by an Afghan army officer who joined the protests earlier in the week.

Burning the Holybook by NATO forces not Americans alone. The meaning and purspose of their existance in Afghanistan is to keep peaceful the country not rage and distrub the citizen. by knowningly or unknowingly( they are well aware of that this is a Quran.) Burnt it.
the damage is already done to one religion. it is irrecoverable. apoliges does not bring back the damage. Just their aim to target one religion. better stop crocodile tears. UN should answer the incident. if not answered, it will be assumed that even UN also against Islam and its followers.

It is difficult for the American soldier in Afghanistan because they are limited by general order #1: not to discuss religion with Afghans. The reason is to avoid offending anyone. The American and Afghan cultures are different. It is difficult to regulate and police all the soldiers because they come from all walks of life in America. The occupiers ARE allowing the Afghans to build the kind of republic they want...the U.S. IS NOT trying to force its way down the Afghans throat. What it is trying to do is give the nation time to stabilize so it does not fall back into the arms of the Taliban again. The Americans ARE interested in assimilating the Taliban into some kind of settlement for Afghanistan....but 'trust' runs thin in a society that has always been at odds with itself; whenever it has not been fighting invaders, the tribes have been at war with themselves. Nobody has ever conquered Afghanistan, and I think the reason is that its history has been just too chaotic. The Afghans are more a loose confederation of tribes than a nation, even under Karzai. The other problem has to do with corruption in Afghanistan. War is hell, and one of the diseases that war can generate and spread, even into the soul and heart of man, is the corruption of the human spirit. Kabul is a town where bags of money have been known to be openly transferred from place to place around town. As we all should know - the love of money is the root of all evil. The reality of life inside Afghanistan is three times worse than what you see in the photos and news reels of the place. Afghanistan in real life looks post apocalyptic...and that's because all its people have ever known for hundreds of years is conflict, strife and war. Introduction of Islam into their culture hasn't helped them a bit (it would appear). The Afghans are still very backwards - even in their 'thinking'. Afghanistan DOES have some very beautiful country, but the capital city of Kabul is still a very miserable place to be, both for the Afghans AND for the occupiers. No civilized Muslim would want to go there on their own to stay and live, believe me. It is a very bad place. MOST that do go are paid a lot of money for what they do and wouldn't be doing it otherwise.

I'm sure that the power of Islam and Muslim has scared them during these years. Burning the Holy Quran shows their weakness. Insulting the religion no matter what kind is disgusting and repulsive in all the manners.

    In The Name of Allah
warmest greetings to the all human throughout the world particularly moslems.
In reply to the latest filthy and disgusting action done in afghanistan about the holy Quran, it worth expressing that this matter demonstrates their true colors, viewpoints, ideas and position toward Islam and Islamic Ummeh with all its forms in the globe.

Such dirty and satanic actions are always condemned and the dirty and bloody people behind the story must be brought into the real justice. Those who insult the sacred and holy books have to bear in mind that the punishment, agony and justice of God is near.

    Always yours,
